I’ve tried a few E.L.F products in the past, I have to say it is a very hit-and-miss brand. Some of the products are fabulous while others leave a lot to be desired. Despite this, I really wouldn’t expect anything else from a brand that sells the majority of their products for only £1.50… you can’t ‘have it all’ after all!
One type of product I had yet to try however, were their lip products, so I was excited to be given the opportunity to try out some of their new lip gloss shades. The five different varieties I tried were…
(from left to right)
1. The Plumping Lip Glaze
2. The Luscious Liquid Lipstick
3. The Minty Lip Gloss
4. The Hypershine Lip Gloss
5. The Mineral Lip Gloss
Read on for a brief overview of the formulation of each…
1. Plumping Lip Glaze, shown in Peach Passion.
My favourite of all the formulations. If you like ‘plumping’ lip glosses that sting your lips then this is for you. Double ended with one plumping, pearly menthol-flavoured gloss and one normal, coloured gloss (they are meant to be worn together, but you can wear them individually if you prefer). I love the cute, compact packaging and the cooling sensation on the lips. Peach passion is a pretty coral colour with a tiny amount of pink shimmer – not really visible in the photo but it leaves a very pretty finish. £1.50
2. Luscious Liquid Lipstick, shown in Perfect Pink.
The most pigmented of all the formulations, this lipstick is packaged in a click-up stick with a sponge applicator. This was actually a bit of a pain, taking about 100 clicks to get any product out (I’m not exagerrating!). Once the product actually makes it out of the packaging the formulation is very moisturing and smooth. Still very much a lipgloss finish but with a creamier consistency. Perfect Pink is a pretty, wearable pink for every day. £1.50
3. Minty Lip Gloss, shown in Chicago.
The minty lip glosses have a nice amount of glitter in them. Although you can still feel the texture of the glitter particles, they aren’t too chunky (a la MAC Superglass!). The minty flavour is (surprisingly!) really nice – and feels like it actually transfers onto your breath which is a plus! Chicago is a very sheer bronze with medium-sized gold glitter particles. It didn’t look so appealing in the tube but is really pretty and subtle on the lips. £3.50
4. Hypershine Lipgloss, shown in Mauve.
Packaged in a click applicator similar to the Liquid Lipstick, but with a brush (though this one took a lot fewer clicks to get the product out, thank God!) The consistency is very smooth, surprisingly non-sticky and super glossy. It has a slightly fruity, pleasant taste. The colour payoff is very sheer, but a nice natural mauvey-brown. £1.50
5. Mineral Lipgloss, shown in Wild.
I was very impressed with the fact that E.L.F have manufactured a mineral-based, paraben free lipgloss for only £3. The tube looks a lot like MAC’s Lipglasses, but actually feels like the lowest quality packaging of all the varieties. The consistency is nice. It’s not too sticky, yet lasts quite a while on the lips. I was disappointed with the colour pay off though, as Wild showed up a vibrant coral with gold shimmer in the tube, but that didn’t really transfer onto the lips.
Overall I have to say I’m pretty blown away by the quality of all these products – especially the Plumping Lip Glaze and the Luscious Liquid Lipstick (both of these surprisingly being part of the lower-priced range of products!)
The colour payoff was the only major let-down throughout the selection I tried, but that is so common amongst any lip glosses, let alone super-cheap ones!
I’ll definitely be expanding my E.L.F collection in the future, I can’t wait to try out a few more products! I do wish they sold it in stores though. Those of you in the U.S.A can pick the products up at Target or online, while in the UK the company is solely internet-based.
