Rimmel are rolling out new releases by the bucketload at the moment! Another new addition to their range this autumn are the matte ‘Lip Velvet’ versions of their much-loved Apocalips lip lacquers, which launched in September.

The idea of these excited me on one hand, but I’m also quite fussy when it comes to matte lip products and very few impress me (one exception being the new Charlotte Tilbury lipsticks – see yesterday’s post for more on those!) so I was intrigued to see how these performed, especially as I loved the originals…
I’m happy to report that the pigmentation is lovely. The formula is a smooth velvet finish. They aren’t as matte as matte can be, which is a good thing in my book, as I like a hint of sheen. However, I do find these quite awkward to apply and also fairly uncomfortable to wear. I might be alone here, as I know lots of people like this kind of formula (If you like Sleek’s version or the Hourglass ones, I think these might be up your street) but for me, this type of hyper-pigmented, liquid matte formulations tend to be a bit awkward. I’m constantly worried they will have smudged onto my face and I don’t really like the way they feel on my lips either; quite powdery and cake-y.
They come in 4 different shades, so less than the regular formula. The shade selections are quite nice though (3 out of 4 are shown above, the other is a deep red) and seem to cover all bases and different tastes. I’ve compared both the packaging and formula to the original below so that you can see the difference.

Staying power, as with the originals, is good and I think the packaging is nice for the price tag too (I really like the new matte finish tube). However, these just aren’t up my street. I think I’ll be sticking to the originals.
What are your thoughts on matte lip creams? Love ’em or hate ’em?!
The Apocalips Lip Velvets are available now, £6.49 each.
