Mineral Foundations: Bare Minerals vs. FYF (Freebie Alert!)

I do love a good magazine freebie, and when I was flicking through the latest issue of Elle (UK) I came across a little gem I thought I should share with you all! This month they have collaborated to give away a sample pot of Bare Minerals Matte foundation, complete with a ‘mini buki’ brush!

I’m afraid I can’t recall the exact page number the voucher was on, but it was a full page so I’m sure you won’t miss it! I popped along to the Bare Minerals counter in Selfridges to collect my miniature set and was given the shade ‘Medium Beige’. I have to say the little brush is just the cutest thing ever! I’m so in love with it (and it’s perfect for travelling too!)

I’m actually pretty new to the world of mineral foundations. I have recently been trying Flawless You Forever‘s Impeccable loose mineral powder in ‘Nude’ so I was interested to compare it to Bare Minerals (seeing as they’re the most ‘well known’ brand on the market).

I was initially skeptical about going for a powder foundation in general, thinking that the coverage would leave something to be desired. I was wrong though… combined with a good concealer under the eyes and on any break outs or red areas, it leaves the skin looking gorgeous: buildable coverage without looking ‘cakey’, or even like you’re wearing foundation at all!

I have really been enjoying the application of both products (which are almost identical in consistency and coverage). For those of you who are also new to minerals, Bare Minerals’ mantra of ‘Swirl, Tap, Buff’ is applicable to all brands of the stuff and works great with my Sigma SS150 brush! I have to say that when compared, I think I prefer the Flawless You Forever (or ‘FYF’) version. It may be the shade, but it seems to be slightly more ‘glowing’, and accentuates the natural tones in my skin beautifully, while keeping my skin matte and fresh looking.

You only need a teeny tiny amount of powder, and the sifting plate within the packaging dispenses just the right amount if you give it a little tap. The FYF product also offers a higher sun protection factor (SPF18) than the Bare Minerals (SPF15) which is always a bonus in my book!

The foundations are similarly priced, but you get 50% more product for your money from FYF (Bare Minerals is £19 for 8g and FYF $28 (around £18.50) for 14g) which is another bonus. What’s more, FYF are offering you all 15% off their foundation until 12th September, just enter the code ‘XT15C1’ at the checkout! (They also offer free international shipping, yey!)

What’s the verdict girls? Are you a fan of mineral foundations? If not, fancy trying them out?
